The objective of this book is to give thorough information concerned with gaharu, and summarize the findings of the state-of-the-art research on gaharu. A key message of this book is to stimulate an understanding that the future of gaharu relies solely on sustainable production of gaharu and habitat conservation, and that technology intervention plays a major role in the process.
In gaharu workshop, there were a lot of inputs put forward by the participants abiding by their own experience in gaharu development. These inputs become the items which can be very valuable to develop inoculation technology and all the related aspects in the future. Nevertheless, there were some participants whose opinions differed from or did not get along with the workshop theme, as they might have different understanding-views or since the reference they learnt so far was different from the gaharu development currently conducted by the FORDA (Forestry Research Development Agency).
In this activities were included the discussion between researchers and gaharu-farmer groups. The input from the farmer groups turned out very beneficial for the further gaharu development. From the training activities, there several were gaharu trees into which were injected the isolates of gaharu-developing fungi. The farmers were asked to thoroughly and carefully observe and assess the results of gaharu formation and development.
The cooperation approaches in the planting of eaglewood-yielding trees in the Banten province was done with the leader of farmer group abiding by the leader of Moslem worshipers there. Meanwhile, the approach with the forest-farmer group in Kandangan (South Kalimantan) was conducted by the Kandangan’s Regent and directly with the self-sufficiency community-group, who indeed have endeavored themselves since five years ago in the eaglewood planting and injection at that regency.
Expectedly, this report would be beneficial to the decision makers and stakeholders who have developed eaglewood in Indonesia.
This output depicts the process in selecting gaharu-developing pathogen, and scrutinizes the analysis on chemical compounds in gaharu as developed. In addition, there were also reported the characters of gaharu products that resulted from induction. As the comparison, several researchers conducted a comparative study by visiting Taiwan, which was related to the gaharu-inoculation technology, as has been already developed there. Meanwhile, a visit to Saudi Arabia intended to look into the preference of Arab community to gaharu products resulting from induction, which was conducted in Indonesia.
After all, this technical report can expectedly bring benefits to the decision makers in gaharu development and to the field practitioners in Indonesia.
This report signifies as part of research results from the output entitled “Better Inoculation-Engineering Techniques”, which comprised three activities, namely (1) Selecting Suitable Inoculums; (2) Developing Several Prospective Inoculants in Large Scale; and (3) Implementing Several Prospecting Inoculums for Artificial Inducement. The technical report of this output reflects the very substantial spirits as accomplished from the development of gaharu-inoculation technology funded by the ITTO PD425/06 Rev.1 (I) Project, entitled “Production and Utilization Technology for Sustainable Development of Eaglewood (Gaharu) in Indonesia”.
This report was prepared and arranged based on field research, literature study, and discussions as performed intensively by the groups of gaharu farmers and other stakeholders. This report can expectedly bring some benefits to the policy holders of gaharu production and gaharu practitioners in the field.
